Pretexting is social engineering centered on a fabricated scenario, or pretext, that makes the victim believe the attacker has a legitimate reason for their request.

Teoria

A successful pretext borrows authority, urgency and familiarity. Authority: the attacker claims to be from the IT department, an executive, a regulator or a trusted vendor. Urgency: there is a deadline or immediate consequence. Familiarity: the attacker uses jargon, names and internal references that a real insider would know, gathered from OSINT on LinkedIn, press releases, SEC filings and social media. The combination disarms normal skepticism and pushes the victim toward fast action. Pretexts are delivered through many channels. A phone call "from the helpdesk" asks the user to install a remote-access tool. An email "from the CFO" asks an accountant to wire funds before month-end. A physical visitor "from the cleaning company" piggybacks through a badge-only door. Each scenario is rehearsed so that the attacker can answer unexpected questions without breaking character. Professional red teams invest as much time in pretext design as in technical tooling. Defense against pretexting is cultural. Train every employee that it is always acceptable to pause, verify and call back using a known internal number rather than one supplied by the caller. Establish out-of-band verification procedures for any sensitive action: large wire transfers, password resets for executives, badge issuance, remote access. The goal is to make the social engineering attack visible by inserting a friction point that an attacker cannot control.
