Image geolocation is the practice of determining the location a photograph was taken using visual and contextual clues.

The easiest case is when the image contains GPS EXIF metadata — most modern phone cameras embed latitude and longitude in the file, and tools like exiftool extract it in seconds. However, most social networks strip EXIF on upload, so in practice the analyst must rely on visual clues: street signs, language, architecture, vegetation, vehicle license plates, utility poles, the position of the sun, landmarks in the background. Combining several of these narrows the location dramatically. Tools like Google Earth, Mapillary and OpenStreetMap help verify hypotheses. Reverse image search (Google Images, Yandex, TinEye) often finds the same image published elsewhere with a caption that gives the location directly.
