A fresh IDS deployment will generate thousands of alerts on the first day; most of them are not incidents.

Every signature trades precision for recall. A narrow rule that alerts only on an exact attack pattern will miss variants; a broad rule that flags "any TLS connection to a non-standard port" will fire on every vpn client in your organization. Tuning is the continuous process of deciding, for each rule, which situations justify an alert and which should be suppressed. The standard approach is to run the IDS in monitor mode for two to four weeks, collect all alerts, then review them by signature and source/destination. For each signature, the analyst either leaves it enabled, disables it, rewrites it, or adds a suppression rule scoped to specific IPs or networks. The goal is an alert volume a human can actually review — usually no more than a few dozen per analyst per day. Documentation is essential. Every suppressed rule and tuning decision must be recorded, because the next analyst on call needs to understand why a given signature was silenced. A well-tuned IDS with 50 high-fidelity alerts per day is far more valuable than a fresh install spewing 10,000 alerts per day that no one reads.
