The average household today runs dozens of connected devices — thermostats, cameras, doorbells, TVs, lightbulbs, vacuums — and most were never designed with security as a priority.

Start with network segmentation. A modern consumer router from ASUS, TP-Link or Ubiquiti supports guest networks or VLANs. Put all IoT devices on a dedicated network that cannot reach your main workstations and phones. Block unnecessary outbound traffic — many smart home devices phone home to dozens of domains; pihole or a local DNS sinkhole gives visibility into what they actually do. Any device that fails without a working internet connection is suspicious. Choose devices that support open standards: Matter, Thread and Zigbee over proprietary clouds when possible, and prefer hubs that run locally (Home Assistant, Homebridge) over cloud-dependent ones. Change every default password during setup. Enable automatic firmware updates where available. Avoid IoT devices from vendors that have no clear patch commitment or that disappear after a year in the market. Finally, periodically audit what is actually on your network. Nmap scans of your IoT VLAN will reveal open ports you forgot about. Fing and similar apps give mobile-friendly inventories. This is the same hygiene that organizations perform with CMDBs and SBOMs, scaled down for a household — and it is just as important, because a compromised smart camera can become a pivot into much more valuable targets.
